A. A. Deans : Antarctic Stories, Tait Electronics Antarctica Gallery, Christchurch Art Gallery Canterbury artist A. A. Deans - well-known for traditional landscape paintings depicting his beloved high country - visited Antarctica for three weeks in 1981, where he spent time sketching, painting watercolours and photographing the environment. Imagining Antarctica, University of Canterbury The University of Canterbury, with Massey University, the University of Tasmania and Antarctica New Zealand, will host the conference on the University’s Ilam campus. Entrance to the Conference is by registration only and late registrations will be accepted until the day before the conference. Free, public, evening events will also be held. Christchurch Antarctic Festival 2008, Christchurch City Council Celebrate Canterbury’s connection to Antarctica. Join us for Family Fun day at the Antarctic Attraction or for any of the fun events throughout the week-long programme of events. An Inconvienent Truth and Global Warming's Impact on the Ice, University of Canterbury Melissa Clark-Reynolds and Bryan Storey will explore the evidence for climate change. Melissa will present Al Gore's slide-show from the Climate Change Project as seen in "An Inconvienent Truth". Bryan will then follow with a discussion on the recent research into how the Antarctic is driving and responding to change. The evening begins with a complimentary drink upon arrival, start time 6:30pm for a 7pm presentation.

First Antarctic Flight of the 2008/09 Season, US Antarctic Program The US Antarctic Porgram and the US Air National Guard will operate the first flight to the Antarctic for the main 2008/09 Antarctic research season on a C-17 Aircraft.

Presentation: "What are we doing about Whaling?", University of Canterbury Professor Donald Rothwell, a noted author and public speaker, presents this talk on Southern Ocean Whaling and what we can do about it.
Not only will this talk be interesting but the venue for the talk is the historic Lyttelton Tug Boat.
Admission is free, but seating will be limited and access to the Tug Boat requires agility-there is no parking on Lyttelton Wharf.

A History of the New Zealand Antarctic Society, Canterbury Museum The New Zealand Antarctic Society celebrates its 75th birthday this year. The Society was created in 1933 and is one of the oldest existing Polar societies in the world. The presentation will review the history of the Society, and will highlight key events and key members, including former Patron Sir Edmund Hillary. Start time 6pm. Contact: N.
